COMMONLY CONFUSED

They are not the same thing

EN 12492 ≠ automatic EN 397 equivalence

Some products may meet multiple standards, but markings must be verified on the actual product.

Treating every climbing-style helmet as an industrial helmet because it has a chinstrap.
Why is this a problem?

Standard scopes and tests differ.

Better approach

Check risk assessment and actual EN 12492/EN 397 markings on the product.

CRITICAL MISTAKE

Treating every climbing-style helmet as an industrial helmet because it has a chinstrap.

BETTER APPROACH

Check risk assessment and actual EN 12492/EN 397 markings on the product.

1

Are shell and energy-absorbing structure undamaged?

2

Does chinstrap/retention system function correctly?

3

Is the workplace-required standard actually marked on the product?
