OBJECTIVE
Prevent electric shock and fire caused by damaged cables, unsuitable panels, poor earthing, residual-current faults and overloading in temporary site power systems.
WHY IT MATTERS
Temporary electrical systems are frequently moved and exposed to harsh site conditions, increasing damage risk.
Cables must be protected from vehicles, water, sharp edges and physical impact.
Distribution panels require suitable enclosure protection, earthing, RCD/GFCI protection and controlled access.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A temporary extension cable was routed unprotected across a vehicle access road.
A vehicle drove over the cable and damaged the insulation.
Correct cable routing, a cable bridge and pre-use inspection would have prevented the electrical hazard.
REMEMBER
Temporary does not mean that a lower electrical safety standard is acceptable.
KEY HAZARDS
Damaged extension cables.
Electrical use in wet conditions.
Missing RCD/GFCI protection.
Poor earthing.
Open or damaged panels.
Overloaded sockets and leads.
Cables crushed by vehicles.
Unauthorised electrical intervention.
CONTROLS
Inspect cables before use.
Remove damaged cables from service.
Verify RCD/GFCI protection.
Confirm earthing arrangements.
Keep panels closed and locked.
Protect cables from water and sharp edges.
Use cable bridges at vehicle crossings.
Do not overload extension leads.
Allow only authorised electricians to intervene.
Reinspect temporary installations regularly.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, temporary electrical systems will be treated with the same seriousness as permanent systems. Damaged cables, open panels or unsafe connections will not be used and will be reported to authorised electrical personnel.
TEAM QUESTIONS
Have cables been inspected?
Is RCD/GFCI protection installed and working?
Is earthing suitable?
Are cables protected from vehicles?
Are panels closed?
Who may carry out electrical intervention?
FIELD VERIFICATION
Cables intact
Plugs intact
RCD/GFCI active
Earthing suitable
Panels closed
Panels locked
Cable routing safe
Vehicle crossings protected
No overload present
Crew briefed
