OBJECTIVE
Prevent hand and finger injuries caused by sharp edges, pinch points, moving parts, hot surfaces and unsafe hand-tool use.
WHY IT MATTERS
Many hand injuries occur when a worker places a hand directly into the hazard zone.
Gloves are important but do not eliminate pinch, rotating-equipment or high-energy cutting hazards.
The safest method is to use tools and equipment that keep hands away from the hazard.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A worker held a metal component by hand while attempting to cut it.
The component shifted unexpectedly and the cutting tool contacted the worker's hand.
Securing the workpiece in a vice and keeping hands outside the cutting line would have prevented the injury.
REMEMBER
Secure the work and use the correct tool instead of moving your hands closer to the hazard.
KEY HAZARDS
Sharp metal edges.
Pinch points.
Rotating equipment.
Cutting hand tools.
Hot surfaces.
Burrs and wire fragments.
Incorrect glove selection.
Unsecured hand-held workpieces.
CONTROLS
Secure the workpiece.
Use suitable tools instead of hands.
Control sharp edges.
Select suitable cut-resistant gloves.
Assess glove use around rotating equipment.
Keep hands outside the cutting line.
Use heat-resistant gloves for hot surfaces.
Do not use damaged hand tools.
Provide adequate lighting.
Reassess risk if the work method changes.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, today our hands will remain in safe positions. Workpieces will be secured, suitable tools used and no one will place hands in cutting or pinch zones.
