OBJECTIVE
Prevent injuries during battery charging caused by hydrogen gas, electrical energy, acid splash, short circuits and fire.
WHY IT MATTERS
Some batteries can release flammable hydrogen during charging, creating an explosive atmosphere where ventilation is inadequate.
A short circuit across battery terminals can produce extremely high current, arcing, burns and fire.
Batteries containing electrolyte can cause serious eye and skin injuries if acid is released.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A worker connected a battery charger inside an enclosed area without checking ventilation.
A nearby ignition source could have ignited gas accumulating during charging.
Adequate ventilation, removal of ignition sources and a pre-charge area inspection would have prevented the situation.
REMEMBER
Ventilation and ignition-source control must be confirmed before battery charging begins.
KEY HAZARDS
Hydrogen gas accumulation.
Sparks and open flames.
Short circuit across terminals.
Electrical shock or arcing.
Acid and electrolyte splash.
Incorrect polarity.
Damaged charger or cables.
Battery overheating.
CONTROLS
Provide adequate ventilation in the charging area.
Remove flames, smoking and spark sources.
Confirm the charger is suitable for the battery.
Inspect cables, plugs and connections before use.
Verify correct polarity before connection.
Keep jewellery and conductive objects away from terminals.
Use suitable eye and hand protection.
Keep eyewash and emergency washing facilities accessible.
Do not use swollen, cracked or overheating batteries.
Keep the charging area clean, dry and access-controlled.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, before charging any battery we will check ventilation, the charger and all connections. There will be no ignition sources, and damaged or overheating batteries will not be used.
TEAM QUESTIONS
Is ventilation adequate?
Are any ignition sources nearby?
Is the charger suitable for this battery?
Is polarity correct?
Where is the eyewash?
What will we do if the battery overheats?
FIELD VERIFICATION
Ventilation adequate
Ignition sources removed
Charger suitable
Cables intact
Polarity correct
Terminals protected
PPE suitable
Eyewash accessible
Battery physically sound
Crew briefed
