OBJECTIVE
Ensure flammable, toxic or oxygen-deficient atmospheres are reliably detected before work and throughout the task where required.
WHY IT MATTERS
An atmosphere may appear normal and have no obvious smell while still containing oxygen deficiency, toxic gas or flammable vapour.
The detector must contain the correct sensors and have valid bump-test and calibration status.
Where atmospheric conditions can change, an initial test alone is not sufficient and continuous or periodic monitoring may be required.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A crew tested the atmosphere before starting work, but process conditions changed during the task.
A new gas release developed and the atmosphere was not tested again.
Continuous monitoring and a stop-work requirement for changing conditions would have prevented exposure.
REMEMBER
When conditions change, an earlier gas reading may no longer represent the current atmosphere.
KEY HAZARDS
Oxygen deficiency.
Oxygen enrichment.
Flammable gas or vapour.
Toxic gas exposure.
Incorrect sensor selection.
Detector outside calibration.
Incorrect sampling location.
No monitoring while conditions change.
CONTROLS
Identify expected atmospheric hazards before work.
Confirm the detector has the required sensors.
Check calibration status.
Complete the required bump test.
Start the detector correctly in clean air.
Test at appropriate locations and elevations.
Record readings in the permit or required record.
Use continuous monitoring where conditions may change.
Do not alter or disable alarm limits.
Stop work, leave the area and reassess if an alarm occurs.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, carrying a gas detector is not enough. We need the correct sensors, valid calibration and correct sampling locations. If the detector alarms, work stops and we move to a safe area.
TEAM QUESTIONS
Which gases are we testing today?
Is calibration valid?
Has the bump test been completed?
Where will samples be taken?
Is continuous monitoring required?
What will we do if the detector alarms?
FIELD VERIFICATION
Gas hazards identified
Sensors suitable
Calibration valid
Bump test complete
Detector started correctly
Sampling points suitable
Readings recorded
Continuous monitoring assessed
Alarm limits suitable
Crew understands alarm response
