Overview

Edge Protection & Guardrails should be managed through a planned system of work: identify the task-specific hazards, eliminate exposure where practical, use engineered or collective controls before relying on PPE, verify critical safeguards before starting, and stop the task when controls are missing or conditions change. This guide applies those principles specifically to design intent, inspection and field use of guardrail and edge-protection systems.

Essential Controls

  1. 1Inspect top rails, midrails, posts, toe protection and fixings before relying on the system.
  2. 2Use controlled temporary protection whenever permanent edge protection is removed.
  3. 3Eliminate work at height where the task can be completed from a safe level.
  4. 4Prioritize guardrails, platforms and other collective fall-prevention measures.
  5. 5Inspect access and fall-protection equipment before use and remove defective equipment from service.
  6. 6Barricade the area below and maintain a practical rescue plan.

  • ×Using improvised access or standing on unsuitable objects
  • ×Starting before anchorage, edge protection or rescue arrangements are verified
  • ×Ignoring wind, rain, ice or changing surface conditions
  • ×Allowing tools or materials to remain unsecured at height

Fall & Rescue Readiness

Stop work after a fall, equipment failure or loss of a critical protection measure. Protect the area, summon trained responders and use the planned rescue method rather than improvising at height.
