OBJECTIVE
Prevent different activities in the same area from creating additional hazards for one another and ensure effective coordination.
WHY IT MATTERS
Two activities that are safe individually can create an unacceptable combined risk when performed simultaneously in the same area.
Hot work, lifting, gas testing, confined-space work, vehicle movement and process activities can directly affect each other.
Effective SIMOPS control depends on joint field assessment, clear responsibilities and communication.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A maintenance crew was working at a lower level while a lifting operation began above them.
The suspended-load route was not known to the lower crew and the work zones overlapped.
A joint SIMOPS assessment, exclusion zone and separation of the activities would have prevented the exposure.
REMEMBER
Each task may be safe on its own; the key risk is how the activities interact.
KEY HAZARDS
Overlapping work areas.

Gas or chemical releases affecting another crew.

CONTROLS
Identify all active work in the area.
Assess interactions between activities.
Assign a SIMOPS coordinator or responsible person.
Separate conflicting work by time or location.
Establish required barriers and exclusion zones.
Verify shared isolations.
Keep emergency and escape routes clear.
Maintain direct communication between permit holders.
Update the SIMOPS assessment when new work begins.
Stop one activity where interaction cannot be controlled.
