OBJECTIVE
Prevent dropped loads caused by wear, deformation, incorrect capacity and invalid certification of lifting accessories.
WHY IT MATTERS
Rigging equipment carries the entire load and failure can immediately drop the load.
Wire rope, synthetic slings, shackles and lifting points have different rejection criteria.
Unmarked or unidentified lifting accessories must not be used.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A synthetic sling showed a cut in its protective cover but was still used.
Damaged internal fibres failed when the load was applied.
Pre-use inspection and quarantine would have prevented the event.
REMEMBER
Never use questionable rigging equipment; quarantine it.
KEY HAZARDS
Cut or abraded slings.
Deformed shackles or lifting points.
Missing identification tags.
Incorrect WLL selection.
Unprotected slings over sharp edges.
Corrosion and broken wires.
Incorrect rigging configuration.
Expired or invalid certification.
CONTROLS
Inspect all rigging equipment before use.
Confirm WLL identification is readable.
Apply rejection criteria specific to each sling type.
Use edge protection where required.
Install shackle pins correctly.
Quarantine cracked or deformed equipment.
Consider sling angle in capacity calculations.
Reject slings damaged by heat or chemicals.
Verify certification and periodic inspection.
Store rigging equipment correctly.

Team, lifting safety starts with rigging condition. Any item with unreadable identification, visible damage or questionable condition will not be used.
