OBJECTIVE

✓

Prevent uncontrolled release of stored energy during hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure testing.

WHY IT MATTERS

✓

Pressure testing can expose systems to energy levels very different from normal operating conditions. A small connection failure can release significant energy.

✓

Pneumatic testing can contain considerably more stored energy than hydrostatic testing because gases are compressible and therefore requires additional precautions.

✓

Before testing, confirm test pressure, equipment limits, blinds, calibrated gauges, relief devices and the exclusion zone.

REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO

✓

A crew pressure-tested a piping system using a temporary blind that was not adequately rated.

✓

As pressure increased, the connection began to deform and a significant leak developed around the flange.

✓

The event could have been prevented through correct rated equipment, an approved test package, controlled pressurisation and an effective exclusion zone.

REMEMBER

✓

Never tighten a pressurised connection or search for a leak with your hand.

KEY HAZARDS

✓

Equipment or piping failure from overpressure.

✓

Ejection of blinds, flanges or fittings.

✓

Hose whip from pressurised connections.

✓

High-pressure fluid injection injuries.

✓

High stored energy during pneumatic testing.

✓

Incorrect or uncalibrated pressure gauges.

✓

Unsuitable temporary test equipment.

✓

Personnel entering the exclusion zone.

CONTROLS

✓

Use an approved test procedure.

✓

Verify the test boundaries.

✓

Use calibrated pressure gauges.

✓

Inspect connections, hoses and blinds before testing.

✓

Establish an exclusion zone.

✓

Increase pressure gradually and under control.

✓

Remain clear of potential projectile paths.

✓

Never adjust connections while pressurised.

✓

Stop the test following abnormal pressure loss.

✓

Fully depressurise before intervention.

SUPERVISOR MESSAGE

✓

Team, today's pressure test involves stored energy. We will not start until test pressure, blinds, gauges and the exclusion zone are verified. No one will approach or intervene on a connection while it remains pressurised.

TEAM QUESTIONS

✓

What is today's test pressure?

✓

What is the system's allowable pressure limit?

✓

Are pressure gauges within calibration?

✓

Where is the exclusion zone?

✓

How will pressure be safely released?

✓

Who will stop the test if leakage occurs?
