OBJECTIVE
Control wheel failure, kickback, sparks, cutting and flying-particle hazards during grinding and cutting work.
WHY IT MATTERS
Grinding discs operate at very high speed and incorrect selection, damage or excessive loading can cause catastrophic disc failure.
The disc's maximum RPM rating must be suitable for the machine and the guard must remain correctly positioned.
Sparks can ignite combustible materials, so the work area, lower levels and spark direction must be checked before starting.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A worker fitted a cracked and unsuitable cutting disc to an angle grinder.
The disc failed at high speed and fragments were thrown across the work area.
Correct disc selection, pre-use inspection and proper guarding would have prevented the event.
REMEMBER
An incorrect or damaged wheel can fragment at high speed and become a lethal projectile.
KEY HAZARDS
Disc failure and flying fragments.
Sparks igniting combustible materials.
Tool kickback.
Removed or incorrectly positioned guards.
Incorrect discs or accessories.
Sharp metal edges.
Eye and face injuries.
Noise and metal-dust exposure.
CONTROLS
Inspect the wheel before use.
Select the correct wheel for the task.
Verify wheel speed rating against tool speed.
Never remove or modify the guard.
Secure the workpiece.
Direct sparks away from people and combustible materials.
Use safety glasses and a face shield.
Maintain a secure two-handed grip.
Disconnect energy before changing wheels.
Stop the tool for abnormal vibration or binding.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, before using any grinder we will check the disc, guard and RPM compatibility. No person or combustible material will remain in the spark path. Equipment without a suitable guard will not be used.
TEAM QUESTIONS
Is the disc suitable for the task?
Is the disc RPM rating compatible?
Is the guard correctly positioned?
Where will sparks travel?
Is the workpiece secured?
How will power be isolated before disc changes?
FIELD VERIFICATION
Wheel sound
Wheel type correct
Speed rating correct
Guard fitted
Workpiece secured
Spark direction safe
Combustibles controlled
PPE suitable
Cable safely routed
Crew briefed
