OBJECTIVE
Prevent splashes, incompatible reactions, spills, incorrect containers and missing labels during chemical transfer.
WHY IT MATTERS
Chemical transfer creates an open handling step, increasing the potential for splashes, vapour release and direct contact.
Incorrect pumps, hoses or container materials may react with the chemical or deteriorate during use.
Flammable-liquid transfer can generate static electricity and ignition if bonding and grounding controls are not applied.
Secondary containers without product identification can expose later users to the wrong chemical.
Spill containment, suitable PPE and emergency washing facilities should be ready before transfer begins.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
An operator transferred chemical from a large drum into a smaller work container.
The secondary container appeared suitable but had no label and its previous use was unknown.
During the next shift, another worker prepared to use the container believing it held a different product.
Using a pre-labelled compatible container and controlled transfer process would have prevented the error.
