LADDER SAFETY TOOLBOX TALK

Prevent falls, slips and ladder instability by selecting the correct access equipment, inspecting it before use, positioning and securing it correctly, maintaining safe body position and avoiding tasks for which a ladder is not suitable.

A ladder should be used only when the task is short-duration and the risk assessment confirms that safer access equipment such as a scaffold or work platform is not reasonably required.

Inspect the ladder before use. Check stiles, rungs, feet, locks, hinges, ropes and labels. Damaged, contaminated, modified or makeshift ladders must be removed from service.

Position the ladder on firm, level and non-slip ground. Leaning ladders should use the appropriate safe angle and must be secured against movement where required.

Maintain three points of contact while climbing. Carry tools in a belt or suitable container so that both hands remain available for climbing.

Keep your body between the stiles. Do not overreach or work from prohibited top steps; climb down and reposition the ladder.

Assess nearby electrical conductors, doors, traffic routes and moving equipment before positioning the ladder. Use suitable non-conductive equipment where electrical exposure exists.

Team, before anyone uses a ladder today, we will first confirm that a ladder is suitable for the task. Every ladder will be inspected and positioned on firm ground, at the correct angle and secured where required. Maintain three points of contact, keep your body between the stiles and climb down to reposition instead of overreaching. Do not work from prohibited top steps. If the ladder is damaged, unstable or exposed to traffic or electrical hazards, stop and select a safer method.
