OBJECTIVE
Prevent incompatible mixing, poor storage and worker exposure during hazardous waste handling.
WHY IT MATTERS
Waste materials can remain flammable, toxic, corrosive or reactive and must be managed separately from general waste.
Mixing incompatible chemical wastes can generate heat, pressure, toxic gases or fire.
Without correct waste identification, handlers and disposal personnel cannot understand the true hazard.
Leaking waste containers can expose workers and contaminate drains or soil.
Temporary hazardous-waste areas should be controlled, orderly, provided with secondary containment and protected against unauthorised access.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
Two maintenance crews placed different chemical wastes into the same temporary drum during a shift.
The container appeared normal externally, but incompatible materials began reacting inside.
After some time the drum became warm and signs of internal pressure were noticed.
Separate waste streams, correct labelling and controlled storage would have prevented the reaction.
