OBJECTIVE
Prevent tools, materials and small components from falling onto people below during elevated work, scaffolding and platform activities.
WHY IT MATTERS
Small tools and hardware can cause severe injury when dropped from height.
The exposure area is not limited to directly below the work point because objects can bounce or deflect.
Effective prevention requires tool tethering, toe boards, housekeeping and exclusion zones together.
REALISTIC SITE SCENARIO
A worker left a small spanner near the edge of an elevated platform.
Vibration caused the tool to fall into a pedestrian route below.
Tool tethering, toe boards and a properly barricaded drop zone would have prevented the exposure.
REMEMBER
Protect the people below as carefully as the people working above.
KEY HAZARDS
Hand tools falling from platforms.
Nuts, bolts and small components dropping through levels.
Materials displaced by wind.
Platform edges without toe boards.
Open grating and floor penetrations.
People entering drop zones below.
Loose materials caused by poor housekeeping.
Dropped objects bouncing beyond barricades.
CONTROLS
Use suitable tool tethers for elevated work.
Verify toe boards and edge protection.
Cover open grating and penetrations where possible.
Establish suitable exclusion zones below.
Store small items in secured containers.
Keep loose materials away from edges.
Secure lightweight materials in windy conditions.
Complete elevated housekeeping checks after work.
Reroute pedestrians away from drop zones.
Reassess the area after any dropped-object event or near miss.
SUPERVISOR MESSAGE
Team, everything we use at height can affect the people below. We will tether tools, control the area beneath us and keep all loose materials away from edges.
TEAM QUESTIONS
What could fall during today's task?
Which tools require tethering?
Is the exclusion zone large enough?
Are toe boards installed?
Is loose material present?
Has wind been considered?
FIELD VERIFICATION
Tool tethers ready
Toe boards installed
Edge protection suitable
Openings covered
Area below barricaded
Materials secured
Housekeeping acceptable
Pedestrian route safe
Wind checked
Crew briefed
