Industrial Radiography Safety: Controlled Area, Dosimetry and Source Security

Industrial Radiography Safety: Controlled Area, Dosimetry and Source Security. Practical critical safeguards, pre-start hold points and stop-work triggers for the field.

Independent HSE guide8 min readHigh Risk

Overview

Industrial radiographic testing introduces ionizing radiation hazards that cannot be controlled by ordinary construction PPE. Only legally authorized radiography personnel may plan exposures, set controlled-area boundaries, use survey instruments and verify that the source has returned to its secured state. A coordinated site exclusion plan must consider floors above and below, walkways, neighbouring units, access control, warning signals and emergency roles. This field guide does not authorize source use or specify exposure times, dose limits or barrier distances.

Main Hazards

  • • Unlicensed work or incorrect equipment/location
  • • Exposure of adjacent areas and different elevations
  • • Barrier breach and unauthorized entry
  • • Faulty dosimetry or uncertainty over source position
  • • Personnel entering controlled area during exposure
  • • Unretracted source or premature release of area

Required PPE

  • ✓Legally required personal dosimetry and monitoring instruments with site PPE; ordinary PPE does not substitute for radiation shielding, time/distance controls or exclusion.
  • ✓Task-specific PPE must be selected against the risk assessment and must never replace isolation or engineering safeguards.

Essential Controls

  1. 1Have licensed specialists verify authorization, planned examination and source accountability.
  2. 2Radiation specialists determine shielding, access limits and SIMOPS impacts using their approved assessment.
  3. 3Install approved barriers, warning systems and access control with clearly assigned responsibility.
  4. 4Authorized personnel test survey instruments, dosimetry and source safety mechanisms as required.
  5. 5Only authorized radiographers conduct exposures under the approved plan; stop for alarms or access breaches.
  6. 6Do not reopen the area until the radiography team confirms source security, survey results and handback.
  7. 7Document the legally responsible radiation protection officer and the emergency contact chain.
  8. 8Include neighbouring units and elevated platforms in controlled-area access sweeps before exposure.

Common Mistakes

  • ×Assuming a single floor-level tape line is an adequate radiation exclusion zone.
  • ×Using routine gas monitors instead of approved radiation survey and dosimetry instruments.
  • ×Reopening the area before the authorized operator confirms secured source and acceptable surveys.

Pre-start and handback verification

  • ✓Licensed personnel, source identification and approved plan verified
  • ✓Controlled area, warnings and adjacent work coordination ready
  • ✓Survey instrumentation, dosimetry and emergency plan ready
  • ✓Stop-work criteria and emergency communication were reviewed with affected crews.
  • ✓The approved work permit, authorized procedure and competency requirements are verified.

Stop-work and emergency response

Stop and implement the radiation emergency plan for exclusion breaches, alarms, uncertain source position, equipment failure or lost communications. Apply the site emergency plan, make the work area safe and restart only after competent authorization.
